Maintaining a USB flash drive or memory

USB flash drives or flash drives are some of the most widely used devices today to move data from one place to another. These small computers are portable disks with storage capacity to store any type of portable file on them, including operating systems in Live version.

One of the drawbacks of the Pendrive is that if they are used improperly, they can generate some errors that in the long run could cause loss of information or damage to the files that we are keeping in them.

To prevent this from happening, it is essential to perform preventive maintenance on our USB flash drives. Thus, they will work correctly and we will avoid errors that may impair their performance.

Preventive Maintenance

Part of preventive maintenance has to do with the proper use of these devices:

- They should not be left near equipment with aggressive magnetic fields, such as televisions or on other computers

- At the end of the work, they must be removed correctly, for which, we locate the device icon in the Windows taskbar, right-click and choose the option to disconnect the USB device, wait a few seconds and this message will appear: “Now you can safely disconnect the USB device. ” With this action, we can avoid future errors on the USB key.

- It is recommended to use, with a certain frequency, specialized software for detecting errors for flash drives. In particular, there is a fairly good one called Check Flash, an Open Source utility with which we can completely analyze the USB memory as if it were a hard disk, with an interface very similar to the well-known Windows Scandisk.

Check Flash presents two types of analysis: The first is read-only and will give us a complete report of any errors the USB flash drive may have. The second is a write mode analysis, which will repair errors in real-time, keeping our USB memory in the best possible condition.

If we decide to run the analysis in write mode, it is recommended to make a backup of all our files, in order to avoid a possible loss of these.

This type of software maintenance for our Pendrive is quite useful since it minimizes frequent errors that appear with the use of the device. In case of critical errors or infections with a virus or malware, the USB memory will have to be completely formatted in NFTS format, with any formatting utility that we want.
